This was a great post. I use many of these techniques as well. It is something I also find lacking with an ABA approach as everyone wants the SLP to join the bandwagon. This is a good explanation of why that should not happen.

I like how you came to a realization of what “play” really should be, child-directed with the clinician incorporating language whenever possible. This is what the field is all about. My professor told our class that we “practice” in our field, because we simply can’t and don’t know it all. So essentially learning never ends.

Thank you for sharing your story… when I was reading this I had to stop and remind myself that it was not my son’s story. I was pregnant with our fourth child, when my shining, beautiful two-year old boy just “couldn’t” talk right. After persisting to get help and a diagnosis, we learned B (as he calls himself because it is all he can say of his name) had CAS – Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Your Tyler’s experiences are my worst fears for my beautiful, cheery little guy. We are blessed (I hope) that he is in an adaptive pre-school environment. I’m printing this to keep for reading in the future; to read and know that this too shall pass. My B will speak, he will be successful, and all his hard work and experiences will help to make him a strong man in the future. Blessings to Ben in his next step of life!
